What Can I Give to the King?

The melody and the phrase "The Name of Jesus", from the song "Your Great Name" is still meandering through my mind.  It just keeps rolling through my thoughts as a persistant refrain.  

This event asked the question "What Can I Give to the King?"  It's a pretty amazing thing to even think about giving a gift to any king.  Who am I that I would have the company of a king, or such a relationship that I could give him a gift?  I'm nothing compared to a king of this earth -- and yet that's the amazing part, we're talking about the king, not of a tiny country -- but the Lord God Almighty, the King of kings!  What gift could I give Him?  There's clearly nothing that I can give Him that He needs from me.  He's self-sufficient; He doesn't need my offering to build His wealth, my worship to build His worth, or my loyalty to build His power.  The King of kings needs nothing.  

But what does He desire?  What gift can I give that the King of All desires?  Dale Frew reminded us that He desires an open heart, faith, and obedience.  He does not need us, but He desires us to be with Him.  The drama made us consider how we treat Jesus.  Do we ever try to give Him gifts without listening to what He wants of us?

This Christmas, while we race around in the culture of gifts, lets stop and listen to the desires of the King.  Let's live our lives for Him.
