A New Beginning:
September 22, 2007

I was suspended in grade seven.  Really.  It’s a story I don’t tell many people and one that doesn’t need me to go into details here; I’m sure that everyone reading this knows, to some extent, what it’s like to do something that they very quickly regret.  In my case, I immediately wished that I could start my day again so I could do things differently.  I wanted a new beginning.

Why am I telling you this?  On September 22nd, at 8:00 pm, in Pembroke’s Festival Hall, Uturn started for their second year.  The summer had ended and everyone was ready for a new beginning – for most, that meant a new year at school.  The regular crew was back: Chris was met with a huge “HEY CHRIS!!”  This time he gave away t-shirts just like the Uturn team wears.

The band lifted things up with great songs such as None But Jesus (Hillsong), Cry of My Heart (Starfield), Creator King (Kathryn Scott), and Happy (Ayesha Woods).  Check out the links to these musicians to see what other songs they’re known for.  Some of the songs talk about hard times that we’ve all gone through.  But these songs also talk about an amazing hope:

“Take me as You find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my lie again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
Now I surrender

Saviour!  He can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Forever!  Author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave” – from Mighty to Save

So what would you do if you could have a new beginning?  What would you change?  Most people I know would want to make changes so that they would have less stress, feel excepted and be just a little more happy.  At Uturn, we watched a very simple man who was never satisfied.  He bought everything he could think of that might make him happy.  Eventually he bought the whole world!  Ya, pretty cool – but then he died.  Gone.

Michael, from the Uturn band, brought us some input from his life.  He described a really horrible day that he once went through.  It’s crazy how things sometimes just go from bad to worse!  He asked if we’ve ever had a bad day like that.  I know I have!  Then he asked us a strange series of questions: “Have you ever had a bad day? a bad week?  a bad life?”  What did he mean by that last part?  He told us that not only did we all probably want a new beginning, but that we all need a new beginning.  He shared what the Bible has to say about this new beginning: first, that we need it because we have all sinned (we’ve all done things God told us not to do) and second, that there is incredible hope because Jesus has done everything that needs to be done for us to have not only a new beginning, but a new life!  I believe what Jesus said and, because of Him, I started living this new life.  Curious?  Email me at info@uturnpembroke.com.
